Intrinsically Safe Voltage Measurement & Capacitance Sense Module

The Type 8 node is an ultra low power general purpose device that can perform either ratiometric voltage measurements from attached sensors or simple devices and/or capacitance measurements from attached, unpowered metal objects. The Type 8 node is certified for use in Group 1 Zone 0 areas with a level of protection of Ex ia for hazardous area location and has an EPL of Ma. The node has been assessed to IEC 600079-0:2011 and IEC60079-11:2011. It can be operated in an ambient temperature -20oC to +40oC.

Features

  • Can be integrated into a sensor enclosure or remotely located.
  • Can have up to two potentiometers fitted internally or externally
  • Each module can have up to 2 potentiometric or simple device channels and 2 capacitance channels fitted.
  • Up to 8 modules can be assigned the same node address (to expand the no of channels available) at any given location or sensor.
  • Available in 2 different configurations; one with screw terminals and one with flying leads.
  • Can have an optional triaxial accelerometer fitted.
  • Fully encapsulated.
  • Networkable - over 80 units can be monitored by one LNC (Local Network Controller) over distances of several kilometres.
  • Data logging may be by single polled events or automatic logging with user selectable rates.
  • Any network topology possible – daisy chain, ring, star or any combination of these topologies. No network terminating module required.
  • CRC-16 used in data transmission to detect any corrupted or incomplete data packets.

Applications

The Type 8 Node has been certified as a general purpose data monitoring module that can perform either ratiometric voltage measurements from attached sensors or simple devices and/or capacitance measurements from attached, unpowered metal objects. Examples of the type of applications the Type 8 Node may be used for include (but are not limited to):
  • Reading a pull-wire extensometer or mine roof monitoring tell-tale (roofAlert Module or rAM).
  • Measuring angular movement.
  • Measuring strain with a resistive strain gauge.
  • Measuring temperature with a remote thermistor or internal temperature sensor.
  • Wire break and crush detection.
  • Proximity detection.
  • Measuring triaxial tilt

The Type 8 Module has been designed to work with the Holville Type 3 Input/Output Nodes (including power supplies) or other compatible devices.

Bnx

           

Bn refers to the main pcb fitted to the node:

B1

B1 is a 4 channel pcb. 2 channels are for external sensor or simple apparatus and the remaining 2 channels are for capacitive sense circuitry          

B2

B2 is a 2 channel pcb with internal or external sensor/simple apparatus fitted.

‘x’ indicates whether a daughterboard has been fitted to pcb B2.

                                               

‘a’

‘a’ is a 2 channel capacitance sense daughterboard

‘b’

‘b’  is a tilt/ magnetometer sense daughterboard. It has no external connections

 Note: Only one daughterboard may be fitted to B2 at a time

Pn      

Pn indicates the presence of internal potentiometers fitted to B2. ‘n’ indicates the no of potentiometers fitted internally

P1

One potentiometer is fitted internally to node B2

P2

Two potentiometers are fitted internally to node B2

Wn

The Type 8 node has a polarity insensitive wired interface which may be either 2-wire or 4-wire.

W2

W2 is a 2 wire interface for both power and data

W4

W4 is a 4 wire interface ( 1 wire pair for power and a separate second wire pair for data)

Sn is used to identify a connection to an external sensor or simple apparatus. ‘n’ refers to the channel number of the connection
